Is Your Baby Ready to Be Potty Trained?

How can you tell if your toddler is ready to be potty -trained?

That’s a really good question and one that all parents wrestle with. It comes down to using your intuition, but you little one will give you some clues that might help you figure it out.

Is it time to start potty training?

These are guidelines to use and clues to watch for.  Your youngster might be ready to be potty trained if he/she:

  • Follows spoken directions
  • Stays dry for at least 2 hours during the day
  • Is still dry after a nap
  • Can walk
  • Shows signs of being uncomfortable in wet or soiled diapers
  • Asks to use the potty chair
  • Wants to mimic a sibling or adult using the toilet
  • Wants to wear big kid underwear
  • Show clues that they are aware of need to urinate or have a bowel movement. These signals might be body language, facial expression, straining, pausing etc.

When it’s time, you have lots of options. You can try the intense 3 day potty training effort or just start to easily introduce your child to the process, get them involved in choosing regular underwear and even a potty chair and talk to them about the process,including hand washing after, any rewards they might earn.

If your child is already wearing cloth diapers, you may find they tell you when they are wet and may express discomfort and ask to be changed. This can present a great opportunity to try potty training and seeing how long the cloth diaper can stay dry.
